Marine Shaft Brake Technology:

How It Works
- A propulsion shaft brake rapidly stops the ship's rotating screw within a few seconds when the reverse gear is placed in neutral, the shaft brake can be engaged based on hull speed when integrated with the Marex OS digital control system allowing the brake to be disabled during docking and still be active when needed for better ship handling and improved brake life.
- Stress on the reduction gear is reduced and ship handling is improved.
- Hull speed is reduced faster then freewheeling the shaft or compression braking with the engine in gear at minimum rack setting.
- In most cases engine stalling issues can not be eliminated with the addition of a shaft brake alone, however, when correctly integrated with a well executed control system stalling can be addressed by slowing the ship down to a hull speed which allows reversal faster.
- The possibility of lines being wrapped around the screw is reduced.
Differing Technologies
- Both disc and drum based shaft brake configurations are available, a number of factors must be evaluated to determine which technology is right for a given application.
- Note: If a shaft-brake vendor tells you that one technology is correct for ALL applications, it is probably because that is all that they have to offer.
